As a part of it’s global initiative, Nissan is going to recall 9,000 units of Micra and Sunny which were produced and sold in India in the duration of 2008 to 2012. The recalled cars are a part of the 2,60,000 cars which Nissan has sold worldwide and have been addressed with the issue of faulty airbags. Recently, the driver side airbags, produced by Takata Corp, have been under scrutiny due to the possibilities of ejecting shrapnel towards occupants once they inflate.

Customers of the Micra and Sunny, which fall under the aforementioned duration of production, will be called upon by the company for replacing the faulty airbags without any additional costs. Takata Corp, which is a major supplier of airbags to other manufacturers too, has been legally challenged by the US Safety Regulators, due to the issue of faulty airbags addressed in around 7.8 million vehicles with Takata airbags globally.

Recently, the issue of recalls by manufacturers has seen an uprise, courtesy the SIAM’s directive issued in July 2012. The Government of India is working upon stringent norms and rules regarding the recalls done by various manufacturers, in order to improvise the quality checks in manufacturing processes. In the last two years, over 7 lakh cars by different manufacturers have been recalled, which have been addressed for varying defects. The manufacturers, though, are voluntarily calling their customers and rectifying the defect free of cost, which they are doing to restore the faith shown by the customers in them.
